Bourtzi - small peninsula that separates the harbor town on the same island of Skiathos in two. The name Bourtzi probably got to be here from the Middle Ages a fortress from which to this day, unfortunately, remained only ruins.
In the early 13th century, after passing into the hands of the crusaders of Constantinople, the island of Skiathos became the property of Genoa brothers Gysi. They built a fortress on the tiny peninsula Bourtzi Venetian style with battlements and loopholes, very similar to a fortress of the same name in Nafplion. Left and right of the main gate located watchtowers. Today, this set the height of the walls on the remaining ruins is not possible, but suggest that the fortification was high enough and powerful. On the territory of the fortress there is the church of St. George, probably also built by Gizi brothers. In this regard and as a fortress called Castle of St. George. The main purpose of fortification was to defend from the constant pirate raids. The fortress was destroyed in 1660 when the island occupied by the army of the Venetian admiral Morosini.
In 1823, after the liberation of the island from the Turkish invaders, the peninsula began to work the first hospital. In 1906, in the center of Bourtzi it was built elementary school, whose construction is financed by Andreas Singros. In 1925, near the entrance to the school placed a bust of the famous Greek writer Alexandros Papadiamantisa, who was born, lived and died on the island of Skiathos.
Today, the picturesque peninsula of Bourtzi, covered with pine forest, with clean and cool air, and stunning panoramic views is a very popular destination among tourists. The old school on the initiative of the city government established a great cultural center with well-equipped conference hall and summer theater, which hosts theatrical and musical performances.
