Temple of Phra That Doi Chom Thong is considered to be a sacred place. Legend has it that the mountain of the same name on which it is located, is home to the good spirits before in northern Thailand came to Buddhism.
The central location of the temple is a golden chedi (stupa). According to ancient records, it was built in the year 940, during the reign of Phraya Ruen Kaew, Chiang Rai Prince.
