Wat Chedi Luang - one of the central and most impressive temples of Chiang Mai. It was built in 1391 during the reign of King Saen Muang Ma, 8th dynasty Mengray representative. Initially, the temple was intended to hold the ashes of his father, King Ku Na.

Later, inside the chedi (stupa), which is the main structure in the temple, were added and other relics, such as the famous Emerald Buddha. To protect his peace remained majestic many-headed naga and elephants installed at the base of the chedi. Over time it was extended to 1475 and reached its final shape: 44 meters - the width of the base and 60 meters - the height. Until now Chedi Luang is the largest in Chiang Mai.

Later stupa suffered a sad consider - in 1545 it was hit by lightning, heavily damaging the structure. Even in the period of 6 years after the incident, the Emerald Buddha remained in the chedi, but was then transferred to Luang Prabang in Laos.

Of great historical importance is the central statue of Buddha in the main room of the temple - viharn. The statue has its own name Phra Chao Attarot and dates from the late 14th century, as the famous chedi.

On the territory of Wat Chedi Luang is a huge and very old tree rock dipterokarp. It is considered one of the shrines of Chiang Mai. Legend has it that if a tree falls, all will overtake imminent disaster.

Another defender of Chiang Mai is located in the temple. Lak Muang, anyway, "Ghost Town", was moved to a small building next to the great tree of the original places - Wat Muang Sadoe in 1800.
