In the former capital of British India, and now - the capital of West Bengal, Calcutta is a royal memorial, dedicated to the Queen of Britain, and Victoria Empress of India. It is a huge structure of dazzling white, built surrounded by lush gardens.
Quadrangular building height of 56 meters, was built on the initiative of the Viceroy Lord Curzon in the 1906-1921 years. The memorial mix several architectural styles, for that matter, in any building of the European type in India. Skip to main Italian Renaissance have been added to the typical eastern parts.
For the construction of the main project architect Sir William Emerson used white marble. The corners of the building are traditionally decorated with small towers and a central dome topped by the figure of Victory (or whatever it is called "the angel of Victoria"), moreover, it is still surrounded by smaller statues, personifying Art, Justice, Architecture, Charity.
Today, Victoria Memorial is a historical museum, which is divided into several sections. The Royal Gallery are paintings depicting the Queen herself, her husband Albert, her coronation, marriage and other significant events in the life of the royal couple. In another gallery housed the works of famous travelers, naturalists and artists Thomas and William Daniels, who visited India in the years 1785-1788. Also, a special room set aside for the exhibits, which are devoted to the history and culture of Calcutta, since its inception Jobe Charnock, until the deprivation of its status as the Indian capital in 1911. In addition, the memorial has a store of rare books, including a book of Shakespeare and Omar Khayyam.
