Church of St. Nicholas in Brest has another name - brotherly St. Nicholas Church. This church is characterized by not very long, but very dramatic history, inseparable from the history of Brest.
When in 1830 it was decided the old 500-year-old Brest move to a new location, the old city was destroyed, it started construction of a new town, which was given the name of Brest-Litovsk. We built everything from scratch: homes, shops, markets, shops and temples were built, too. Temples in the new Brest-Litovsk was built on the donations of the faithful, who had yet again with his own money to rebuild their homes.
In 1885, the Orthodox Brotherhood of Brest-Litovsk, the beautiful church built of wood. City rumors and called her - fraternal church. During erupted in 1895 a fire burnt down half the city, and with it the fraternal St. Nicholas Church.
It was decided to build a new stone church of St. Nicholas, which began to collect donations. On the sacred cause money helped two Orthodox Brotherhood of St. Nicholas and Athanasius of Brest. At the temple began to donate money to the sailors and families of seafarers, as St. Nicholas is the patron saint of seafarers. Especially a lot of donations from the families of the victims began to arrive with the beginning of Russian-Japanese War in 1904.
Construction of the church began in 1903, however, the money is still not enough. Then the remaining amount contributed Emperor Nicholas II. Russian king also handed over to the church lists of the dead sailors of the Pacific Fleet for eternal remembrance.
Church of St. Nicholas was consecrated on December 6 1906. On its architectural shape was influenced by sailors. It is like a huge ship. Xin its domes like the waves of the sea. The church is made in the pseudo-Russian style (imitating the style of the XVII century Moscow).
The Church was not closed until 1961, when the Soviet Union began the widespread struggle with religion. Until 1989, the church was located in Nikolaev city archives. After much debate and numerous requests, the church was returned to believers. The church was completely restored in 1996.
