Murie Grey Abbey and the Church of Saint Augustine - is one of the oldest attractions in Bolzano. Massive architectural complex of the abbey is located on the right side of the Piazza Gris. The first religious inhabitants of the monastery began in the early 15th century Augustinian monks. Then, in 1522, the year, the abbey was sacked rebellious peasants and later, during the reign of Napoleon, ruined again. Augustinian Order was abolished in 1807, the year the Bavarian government, and all his possessions, including Murie-Gris, in 1845, the year on the orders of the Emperor of Austria gave the Benedictines, expelled at the same time in Switzerland.
With the arrival of the Benedictines started a new page in the history of the abbey, called Murray Cape Gris-and the history of local wine making. The monks were very serious about the observance of discipline, and that relate to the production of wine, too. At the beginning of the 20th century, the wines produced in the territory Murie-Gris began to export to some German-speaking regions. In those years, there were grown grapes such as Santa Magdalena, Malvasia, Lagreyn, Krettser and Pinot Grigio.
The oldest part of the abbey is now represented castle built in the 12th century Counts Mori Greyfenshteyn. The castle later became the property of the Austrian Dukes and then, in 1406, the year - Augustinian monks, which turned it into a monastery. The main tower of the castle was the church bell tower. It is in this bell tower is the most difficult in the entire South Tyrol bell - it weighs 5026 kg!
Church of St. Augustine was built in 1769-1771-m respectively in the Baroque style. The vaults of the central nave and the dome, as well as seven altarpieces decorated with frescoes by the famous Tyrolean painter Martin Knoller.
