Dominican Church with its ancient cloister is situated about a hundred meters to the west of the city's main square, Piazza Domenikani. The Church, as the name implies, is dedicated to St. Dominic and adjoining buildings - all that remains of an ancient Dominican monastery, the first mention of which relate to the 1272-th year. These were some of the earliest Gothic buildings in South Tyrol, and the monastery has long remained an important spiritual and cultural center of the region.
After the secularization of 1785, the year the entire monastery complex was significantly changed. Serious damage was also caused to buildings during the construction works of the 19th century and during the aerial bombing of the city during the Second World War. But, fortunately, in the Gothic church frescoes of the 14th century, the choir stucco rococo altarpiece work and Guercino mid-17th century. A chapel of San Giovanni entirely painted with frescoes, which are considered a real gem of Gothic art in Bolzano and around South Tyrol. Traditionally, their creation is credited school of Giotto (first half of the 14th century). Also pay attention to works of art in the chapel of Santa Caterina and the frescoes by Friedrich Pacher late 15th-century cloisters.
Once Piazza Domenikani, where today the church of the same name located besides Academy of Music and the city art gallery, was the center of commerce and art in Bolzano in the 14-16 th centuries. Over time, it gradually lost its importance, giving the palm area Valterplatts.
