Valterplatts - is the main square of Bolzano, located in the heart of the old part of the city and named after the medieval poet Walther von der Vogelweide. It was here, in this area, holding a Christmas and flower market, as well as the Pumpkin Festival is celebrated. Incidentally, the famous Christmas market is going up to a million visitors each year!

Valterplatts was founded in 1808 on the site of the vineyard, who controlled the Bavarian royal family. King Maximilian sold the vineyard to the municipality of Bolzano for 3000 florins was on the condition that it be turned into a square. Gradually, they began to build around the houses and hotels - one of the first was «Hotel Greif». In those years, Bolzano, thanks to its mild climate and beautiful surrounding landscape, and a well-preserved medieval buildings, became a popular tourist destination. To accommodate the many tourists, aristocrats and were built the first luxury hotels.

In 1889 in the center of the square has a statue of the poet Walther von der Vogelweide, who lived in 1168-1228-m respectively. In the years of the fascist regime, she was out of here, but later returned to his seat. Nearby seen Cathedral of Bolzano, railway station, as well as a variety of historic buildings, which are now housed banks, cafes and restaurants. I must say that over the years the area bore different names - Maximilian-Platz in honor of the King of Bavaria, Yohannas Platz, Valterplatts then Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, the area of the Madonna, and finally again Valterplatts. In its not very long history, this area saw many historical figures - Napoleon, Emperor Franz Joseph, his successor, Charles I, king of Italy Victor Emmanuel III and Mussolini.
