Bender Fortress - a monument of architecture of the XVI century, the walls of which survived in its original form, one of the main attractions of the city of the same name.

The fortress was built on the right bank of the Dniester River, on the orders of the Turkish Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, in the submission which in those days was Moldavia. The architect made famous architect Sinan Ibn Abdulmeyan-huh.

Bender Fortress built by the canons of Western forts bastion type, during the following centuries repeatedly extended and rebuilt. In the seventeenth century. fortress consisted of a citadel built in the shape of an irregular polygon. In the corners it was built eight towers, three of which are round, four - square and one tower - a multi-faceted. Under each tower is located deep cellars in which to store gunpowder, arms and provisions for the soldiers. The height of the walls, which were connected to each other tower, reached three meters. In one of the towers housed a mosque of the Prophet Suleiman.

The most ambitious was the upper part of the fortress, which has ten bastions joined by walls, surmounted by an earthen rampart. The height of the walls at the same time reached nearly five meters, and a thickness - six. Around the fortress was dug wide pit that is filled with water, if necessary.

The lower part of the fortress has six towers and was intended mainly for accommodation Janissaries, gunsmiths and craftsmen serving the army.

Over its history, the castle was repeatedly subjected to attacks and sieges, but for a long time remained in the possession of the Turks. For the first time, Russian troops took the fortress of Bendery in 1770, during the Russian-Turkish war. During the battle, the fortress has undergone significant destruction. It is noteworthy that during the signing of a peace treaty between Russia and Turkey, the right bank of the Dniester River to the city of Bendery remained in the possession of the Turks. In 1812, the Bendery fortress still was handed over to the Russian empire, its reconstruction was carried out.

Today the castle - a place of deployment of the army of the PMR.
