Cathedral

The centerpiece of the Basel takes Cathedral - a symbol of the city. The cathedral is a late-basilica with a transverse nave and choir of the XII century and has a lot of typical Gothic elements. The walls of the cathedral built of red sandstone and topped with a roof made of colored tiles and the two towers. Above the central portal depicts Emperor Henry II, the founder of the cathedral, wielding a model of the church. Next to him - Empress Cunegonde.

After a heavy fire in 1258, the church updated and aisles were built tomb-chapel. After the devastating earthquake in 1356 that destroyed the vaults, the tower and the crypt of the cathedral, the building was rebuilt again in keeping with the style of the time. This was especially evident in the sculptural decoration of the cathedral.

In the northern part of the cathedral is the tomb of Erasmus of Rotterdam. In the crypt of the Cathedral preserved fragments of frescoes and late-Lapidarium - the remains of a masonry temple of IX century.
