Armenian Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator in Baku - one of the major attractions of Baku. Originally the church belonged to the Armenian Apostolic Church.

The church was founded in 1863. The initiator of its construction was made by the head of the Diocese of Shamakhi Daniel Shahnazaryants. The temple was built with funds donated by Javad Melikov.

The temple was built on Kolyubakinskaya Square (today - the Fountain Square). This place was originally proposed for the construction of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, but the size of the area did not meet the proposed structure. Then, the military governor of MP Kolyubakin, ordered to allocate the land for construction of an Armenian church. The author of the project of the building of the temple was the architect of Baku KK Gippius.

Consecration of the church took place in 1869, while its construction ended only in 1871. Three years later, in the wall of the temple were built parochial school, a library, and housing construction. In 1888, at the church bell installed. After a while, it has been erected next to the building, which housed a library. In 1918 the church was given cathedral status.

Facade of the temple was decorated with six-pointed "Star of David". Until 1988-1990, the church was the main place of prayer meetings most of the Armenian community in Baku. In 1989, the church underwent an act of vandalism. With him were acquitted of all creeds. In 1990 there was a fire, it is very damaging to the church, after which it was abolished.

In 2001, the church declared an architectural monument of local importance. In 2002, on the basis of the church it was founded a library. In 2011, in the building of the Armenian church restoration was carried out. Today the building of the Church of St. Gregory the Illuminator is used as a book depository president.
