Memorial museum of the famous revolutionary, Arctic explorer and director of the All-Union Arctic Institute RL Samoilovych in the city of Azov, was opened in 1981. It is located on the outside of Leningrad in the house where he was born and lived with his family Samoilovich. It is the only museum in Russia, dedicated to this talented polar scientists.
The exposition of the memorial museum consists of three parts, namely: the memorial room of exhibitions "Northerner forever" and "All life - the expedition." The memorial room has been recreated the interior of the end of the XIX century. - The beginning of XX century. with authentic objects, photographs, personal belongings and archival discoveries. The results of the research activities are displayed in graphic materials and art compositions. Visitors have the opportunity to learn about the life and work of the famous polar explorer after whom were named cove on the Severnaya Zemlya, on the Strait of Franz Josef Land, a peninsula, a mountain in Antarctica and Cape Island in the Kara Sea.
Future Arctic explorer and founder of the Leningrad Arctic Institute Rudolf Samoilovich was born in 1881 in Azov. In 1928 he led an expedition on the icebreaker "Krasin", which was engaged in rescue W. Nobile and his compatriots. With this Samoylovich it became known to the whole world. In the 30 years. Doctor of Geographical Sciences has become one of the leaders of the international community "Aeroarktika" Geographical Society of the USSR, honorary member of the International Maritime Arbitration and a member of geographical societies of Austria, the USA, Sweden. In 1939, he was shot and rehabilitated in 1957. On account of RL Samoilovych 21 expedition, their scientific heritage is significant to date.
In September 2011, the 130th anniversary of the birth of the researcher and the 30th anniversary of the museum staff Azov museum opened a new exposition. At present, the name of the scientist Samoilovych undeservedly forgotten.
