Gobustan State Historical-Artistic Reserve is located in the eastern part of Azerbaijan, 60 km south of Baku. The word "Gobustan" comes from the two words "gobu" and "Stan". "Stan" means "place" and the word "gobu" Turkic language means "dried-wide riverbed" or "ravine".

Gobustan Historical-Artistic Reserve is a large territory, rich in ravines. The total area of ​​the reserve is 537 hectares. There remained a huge amount of evidence of human life, beginning with the X-VIII millennium BC until the Middle Ages - petroglyphs, the ruins of the ancient sites of people, as well as a huge prehistoric dolmen. In addition, the rocks of Gobustan preserve the memory of the stay here of Roman legionnaires.

The first archaeological excavations in the reserve were conducted in 30-ies. XX century. It was then found about 3,500 rock marks, images and drawings, as well as holes in the rocks and man-made pits. In 1965 the study of the historical monuments of Gobustan took special scientific expedition, which carried out archeological studies about 20 homes and shelters, over 40 burial mounds. Then it was discovered and reported 300 petroglyphs. In September 1966 he received the status of Gobustan Reserve.

Of particular interest to tourists it is located on the northeast slope of Mount Djingirdag one of the monuments of the Archaeological Reserve - an ancient musical instrument - a stone Gavaldash. On the rocks of Gobustan can see more than 400 ancient cup recesses, which were made with hard stone tools. Researchers attribute the recess to the Neolithic period. The holes were used to collect rain water, the blood of sacrificed animals, and for other purposes.

Also on the territory of the Gobustan State Historical-Artistic Reserve a lot of shrines, among them - "Sophie Novruz", "Gara atly," "Sophie Hamid" and others. With respect to animal life and vegetation of the reserve, its territory is quite poor.
