Harbour Bridge is one of the most beautiful sights of Auckland. It connects the two banks - St. Marys Bay and Northcote (the central part of the city from the north) through the Waitemata Bay. Its construction lasted 5 years - from 1954 to 1959. The bridge is 1,150 meters, which makes it the second longest bridge in New Zealand. The main span of the bridge is 244 meters from column to column, the height is up to 43 meters.
The bridge was built after World War II, when Oakland began to grow rapidly in a northerly direction. Then the bridge project was created, which in addition to the pedestrian part consisted of six road lanes. However, the cost of the project has confused the city authorities, and it was decided to reduce the width of the bridge to four lanes. From the pedestrian zone had completely abandoned. Has the project company Freeman Fox & Partners, the contractor was construction company Cleveland Bridge Co. Part of the bridge structure mounted on the shore and then transported via barge to the right of the bridge. Construction did not stop even in bad weather.
10 years after the opening of the traffic transmitted by the bridge in both directions, so increased that in 1969 it was decided to increase it by adding two lanes in each direction. After a few years of structural integrity has been jeopardized because of the extra load on the completed strip. Cracks that were eliminated, and in 2007 the movement of trucks on the bridge was prohibited.
Now rush hour traffic on the bridge is carried out by a reverse movement. The band allocated to different areas depending on traffic, shielded portable striker. Today, the bridge passes through more than 170,000 vehicles per day.
