Photo: Monastery of St. Simeon
Not far from the mausoleum of the Aga Khan are the ruins of an ancient Coptic monastery of St. Simeon. The monastery was built in the VI century and lasted until the XII century. The fortress-monastery of monks served as protection against bandits and the Bedouins. Eight-meter walls were stone and brick foundation top. While impressive fortifications in 1173, the monastery was destroyed by the Muslims, and since then lies in ruins. The abbey church preserved frescoes. And nearby you can see the caves, carved into the rock - the first cells of the monks of the monastery.
