Basil's Cathedral in Astrakhan - one of the city's main attractions. The idea of establishing the Church of the arrow on the Bold and the Volga, arose in connection with important events for the city. The first such event took place in 1822, after destroying the Resurrection-Boldin monastery, who was at this point, after which it remained without parish church. And the second - in August 1858 when, after a terrible fire in villages wheelwrights, coopers and blacksmiths were transferred from the affected part of the city on the "arrow" and formed a new district of the city - the so-called selenium. Local residents have been attributed to the arrival of Kazan Church, but because of its size could not accommodate all the parishioners. Then it was decided to build a large new church in the village center.
The temple was built on the initiative of the well-known merchant and philanthropist Astrakhan II Gubin. Construction work started in 1879 the cathedral was made by the author of the project architect Znamenskii Astrakhan. Church bell tower and high bunk erected in the style of traditional Russian architecture. In March 1885, the bell tower of the church bells installed. The ceremonial consecration of the church took place on 29 September of the same year.
Intercession Church was one of the few temples in Astrakhan, which are not touched by the newborn Soviet government. While in 1941 it was used as a warehouse sugar.
A huge contribution to the improvement of the temple put Archbishop F. Stavitskiy. Referring to the faithful, he asked them to donate silver, copper and bronze objects, to cast them out of the new bells, as the former were taken in 1930. Also in 1928, F. Stavitskiy trying to make the church a cathedral, but did not, as he was arrested. And only in 1943 the archbishop was able to achieve its goal - Protection Church officially declared cathedral. F. Stavitskiy was buried in the cathedral, under the left altar.
The appearance of the monastery was first upgraded to the 450 anniversary of Astrakhan.
