John the Baptist church in Asenovgrad is located on the western outskirts of the city on a cliff. Among the locals spread the name "Church of St. John." Its creation is attributed to the 13-14 centuries, according to some versions - 11 veku..opredelenie age structures primarily based on its architectural features. It was built as a chapel, but due to the rather large dimensions (length - 8 m, width - 5.5, about 5 in height) is recognized by the church. It is a single-nave building with a tripartite apse and porch. The building was constructed of broken stone, alternating with bands of brick. The facade is decorated with blind arches and false niches. The church of St. John in the north wall of the top six slots, similar loopholes, if necessary, they served defense element of the building and turned it into a kind of fortress.

The church has five blind arches on the north and south walls, and on the western wall - the usual three arches. The apse is three-sided shape and has three small windows. The wall thickness of about one meter. 800 years ago, "St. Yan" was the church and the land together with the strength of the Archangel Michael defended Stanimaka (the ancient name of Asenovgrad) from the north. According to the architect Stoilov, while the importance of the values ​​of the church and fortress were equivalent.

For many years, the church served as the liturgical needs of the faithful, but in the late 18th - early 19th centuries, it was already half destroyed, probably as a result of attacks kirdzhaliyev .  Shortly thereafter, the upper part has been restored and a wooden roof, which was also replaced during recent restoration work .  Up to now well-preserved paintings of the iconostasis and interior niches and altar .  From medieval frescoes of the temple have survived only two - the figure of St. John the Baptist in a niche on the south wall, and the meeting of Mary and Elizabeth .  Also on the south wall of the barrier located now defunct iconostasis with the stylistic features of the 14th century .  Other remains of paintings were discovered in 2002 and restored three images from the 19th century, the figure of the Virgin Mary and Christ on the columns .  The third fresco - John the Baptist - was removed during the restoration it was opened under a different - a medieval image .  Now the mural with the image of St. John the Baptist is in the museum church of St. George .
