Lago della Sella is located in the Swiss canton of Ticino, in the commune of Airolo. You can reach it through the famous St. Gotthard Pass. From the mountains to Lake Ospitsio is a small mountain path length of several hundred meters.

Lago della Sella can be considered a creation of human hands, because it was formed by installing a large dammed wall built in the period from 1945 to 1949 years. The height of the wall is 36 meters and a length of about 334 meters. Total reservoir accommodates more than 9 million cubic meters of water. Water from the lake and the nearby Lago di Lusendro used for the production of electricity in plants Airolo station.

Two huge power generator, each about 29 megawatts produce so much energy that it is more than enough to cover the needs of Chiasso - Switzerland's southernmost city, numbering about 10 000 inhabitants.

Since the construction of the power plants was carried out immediately after the Second World War, the lack of labor and building materials led to that type of construction was chosen, allowing in the shortest possible time at the lowest cost to build a wall that can withstand the pressure of the incoming fluid in the reservoir.

As time has shown, the calculation was correct. Even today, after more than half a century artificially created lake Lago della Sella continues to perform once delivered to him the task of the people and makes it no worse than modern power plants.
