Aarhus Cathedral

One of the finest churches in Denmark is Aarhus Cathedral, which is located on Cathedral Square. The temple was erected in honor of the patron saint of sailors - St. Clement, so its full name - the Cathedral of St. Clement.

The history of the cathedral began at the end of the XII century, when the bishop Peder Vognsen decided to build a temple. In 1300, the construction of the Romanesque cathedral was completed. 30 years later in 1330 the Cathedral of St. Clement was burned, and only in 1449, the church was rebuilt, in the Gothic style.

The temple that we see today, is one of the largest cathedrals in Denmark: the height of the nave is 96 meters, the height of the tower - 93 meters, indoor hall can accommodate up to 1,200 worshipers. During a fire, most of the interior of the cathedral burned down, to have survived several murals, a total area of ​​220 sq.m. Among the frescoes is one the oldest - "Windows Lazarus", dated 1300 year.

Particular attention in the church attracts visitors plated folding altar, authored by Lübeck sculptor and painter Bernt Notke (1479). Tombstones are made by the Flemish sculptor Thomas Kvelinusom. Also inside the cathedral it is the largest organ in Denmark (6352 tubes), which was built in 1730.
