Basilica of Santa Chiara - the church in Assisi in Umbria, in which the relics of St. Clare, followers of St. Francis of Assisi, and the founder of the Order of Poor Clares, also known as the Order of St. Clare.

Construction of the church began under the direction of Filippo Campello, one of the most prominent architects of his time. In October 1260 the remains of St. Clare moved from the chapel of San Giorgio in a new temple, where they were buried in the ground under the main altar.

After nearly six centuries of oblivion the remains, as well as the remains of St. Francis of Assisi, were found in 1850 as a result of many careful studies. September 23 the same year, the coffin with the body of St. Clare was raised from the ground and opened: flesh and clothes for many centuries have turned to dust, but the skeleton is perfectly preserved. Two decades later - in September 1872 - the bones of the saint were solemnly transferred to a tomb in the crypt of the Basilica of Santa Clara, which was built specifically for this purpose. The process led by Archbishop Pecci, who later became Pope Leo XIII. Today, the relics of St. Clare can be seen in the crypt.

Every year in August, held in Assisi religious festival in honor of the saint. In September, it marked the discovery of her grave, and in October - relics. Incidentally, in the same church buried St. Agnes of Assisi.
