After a major earthquake in 1880 the twin towers of the cathedral (the height of 105 meters each), executed in the Gothic style, crumbled into dust. Later, the tower and facade of the cathedral was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style.

The inner space of the temple was also decided in the Gothic Revival style. The lower windows are made of glass spotted by the Viennese architect Herman Bolle in the late XIX century.
