Sakhalin Art Museum in the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is one of the youngest museums in Russia and the only art museum in the Sakhalin region. It is located in a building made in the architectural style of Art Nouveau. The museum building, built in 1930, lined with embossed masonry and decorated Doric concrete and stucco. The author of the project was made by the Japanese architect.
Earlier this building housed the Japanese bank "Hokkaido Takushoku" after - the Sakhalin branch of the State Bank of the USSR. However, in the 1980s. building reconstructed and handed over to the museum. Today the museum building - a historical and cultural monument of the Sakhalin Region.
Sakhalin Art Museum was founded in August 1983. In February 1987, the opening of the first temporary exhibition of the museum in the House of officers of the Soviet Army, the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. In March 1989, a permanent exhibition was opened in the current building.
Currently, the museum holds more than 11 thousand. Units exhibits. The museum collection consists of eight chapters. Part of the museum collection, visitors can see by visiting the temporary exhibitions in the large hall and the museum on the first floor lobby.
