The best starting point for exploring the Sakhalin - it's Sakhalin Regional Museum. The museum building was built in 1937 in traditional Japanese style "teykan zukuri" (imperial crown) for the museum governorship Karafuto during the capture of the island by the Japanese. After the Second World War and the liberation of South Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands, the museum was nationalized by the Soviet Union and opened as a Regional Museum.

The museum is the custodian of the history of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. Museum presents a rare collection of Aboriginal cultural objects Sakhalin: the Nivkh, Ainu Uilta (Orok), paleontological collections, original documents, photographs and objects reflecting the complex history of the region in XIX-XX centuries.
