St. Martin - a church built for the Augustinian Order, located in the Old Town of Warsaw.
The church was founded with the Augustinian monastery and the hospital of the Holy Spirit in 1353 at the expense of Prince Zemovita III and his wife Euphemia, with the support of Pope Innocent VI. The church - a Gothic building, made of stone, was built at the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries. The entrance was located on the side of the city walls, not from the street, as it is today. The church had three altars: the main altar of St. Martin, the two sides of the altar: the Holy Spirit and St. Dorothy.
Fire in 1478 destroyed almost the entire street as a whole, including the church. Marble altar, paintings and decorations have been lost.
In the 17th century church of St. Martin was reconstructed in baroque style by the Italian architect Giovanni Spinola. The main entrance has been made on the part of the city streets, the altar, on the contrary, has found its place in the southwestern part of the part of the city walls. The furniture in the early Baroque style was created by Ian Hubert Haenel - sculptor of King Władysław IV Vasa. Later, the church was rebuilt again on the project Carol Wow. At the facade appeared wavy lines in the Rococo style.
During the Second World War, the church was destroyed, reconstruction began after the war. Currently, the interior of the church is largely modern.
