Since ancient times this place was a sanctuary of Apollo. Later it was built the Ionic Temple of Apollo. It was a grandiose building, once a luxury is not inferior to the temple of Artemis at Ephesus, and the equally famous as the sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi. In Didim we lived only the priests of the temple. Every four years they held celebrations in honor of the god with sports competitions and musical performances.

In the V century BC Temple destroyed by the Persians, Alexander the Great but it was decided to restore and expand. But to finish the temple did not succeed, and later the Byzantines were separated almost all the marbles. There were only three large pillars and plenty of small stones.

Internationally known for expressive relief on stone, depicting the head of Medusa the Gorgon.
