Ulcinj is located on the Adriatic coast, the geographical position at the time obliged the city to build a sturdy fortification structure. Fortress of the Old Town, rises above the sea level of 60 meters, its history goes back about 2500 years. Fortress experienced the different tracks and save the ancient civilizations that once were related to those territories - Greeks, Romans, Turks, Serbs.
Along the city walls stretches a wide road, which narrows as it approaches the highest point. Today, the fortress remained intact since the construction of residential buildings of the XVI century, where people live today.
The peculiarity of the castle in its architectural structure: a modern type of staircases involve a plurality of outputs, leading to the sea from all sides. Today the fortress is a restaurant for tourists.
It is known that in the years from 1672 to 1676 the fortress was a prisoner of Shabtai Tzvi - renowned Kabbalist and false messiah. There is also a legend that the first of the Ulcinj fortress belonged to the pirates who captured Miguel de Cervantes, the creator of "Don Quixote." The writer spent 5 years in captivity, and one of the local girls inspired Cervantes to create the legendary image of Dulcinea, which, in turn, inspired by the exploits of the literary hero of the novel - Don Quixote.
