Drama Theatre named AP Chekhov in Taganrog is one of the oldest theaters in the south of Russia. Taganrog Home theater troupe put dramatic artists, working under the guidance of a noble Petrovsky, since 1827

Special heyday Taganrog Theatre reached after the construction in 1866 of the building - a unique monument of architecture. The author of this project were the Italian architect K. Londeron and Russian architect Nikolai Trusov. The theater was very well planned: spacious hall with excellent acoustics, fine sculpture, painted elegant and delicate chandelier. Planning, design and decoration of the hall - the hall is a small copy of Milan's La Scala.

In 1920, the Drama Theatre was nationalized and called folk art. In February 1927 the institution celebrated its 100th anniversary. This day was a real treat for the whole city. In 1944 the theater was named AP Chekhov. In the same year the theater visited by a group of graduates of the Moscow State Institute of Theatrical Arts, the course MM Tarkhanov

In the year of the 150th anniversary, in 1977, the theater was awarded the Order "Badge of Honor". Since 1980, the city began to take place the traditional international theater festivals "At home, AP Chekhov", which is attended by best theater groups not only Russia but also Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Australia, Spain, Germany, Italy, Croatia, Japan, and others. In 2002 and 2010 drama theater successfully participated in international festivals in Badenweiler with the performances of "Goblin" and "The Proposal" Anton Chekhov. In November 2003, the theater group participated in the first International Theatre Forum "Golden Knight" held in Moscow.

Today, the theater continues to create, carefully keeping the traditions of Russian art. Drama Theatre named AP Chekhov has repeatedly proved that he was worthy to bear the name of his great compatriot.
