Open in 1897, Art Gallery of New South Wales is located in Sydney park «Domain». Today it is the largest public gallery in Sydney and the fourth largest in Australia. A visit to the exhibition halls in which art is represented in Australia, Europe and Asia, for free.

In 1871 in Sydney held a public meeting, which decided to establish the Academy of Art "for the promotion of fine arts through lectures, workshops and regular exhibitions." Up to 1879 the main focus of the Academy has been organizing the annual art exhibitions, and in 1880 the Academy was dissolved, since the execution of the tasks has taken over the public gallery, which was called - Art Gallery of New South Wales. Unfortunately, in 1882, most of the collections of the gallery was destroyed in the fire, and over the next 13 years was a question about the need to build a permanent building for the gallery.

The building was designed by architect Vernon was built in 1897 in the classical style. In the same year it opened the first two exhibition halls, two more have opened Two years later. Watercolours Gallery was built in 1901, and in 1902 completed a large oval hall. In 1970 the building was attached to the "Wing Captain Cook" in 2003 opened a wing, which exhibited works of Asian artists. Outside the building is a bronze sculpture, symbolizing the contribution to the art of the four great civilizations - Roman, Greek, Assyrian and Egyptian.

Today in the exhibition Art Gallery featuring the work of many Australian artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. 44 works are included in the list of "100 Masterpieces of Australian Painting". Among the works of European masters paintings by Rubens, Canaletto, Picasso, Rodin, Monet, Cezanne and other renowned artists from the 16th century to our days.
