Independence Square in Sumy is the historical and administrative center of the city. It is with this place began construction of the city in the mid-17th century., When its founders - Colonel Gerasim Kondratiev and Governor Arsenyev Cyril - began to implement their plans for the construction and arrangement of the famous Sumy fortress, which was based Sumy Cossack Regiment.
In 1694 there was erected a wooden Nicholas Church. Today, it recalls only a wooden cross, as the church itself was destroyed by the communist barbarians in the 1930s. In 1702, after the death of Colonel G. Kondratyev was completed construction of another church - the Cathedral of the Resurrection, which is currently the main decoration of the Sumy area. Formed around churches, plazas and Resurrection Mykolaiv later merged into one.
For a long time the area was known as Peter's - in honor of Peter I, who was here on the eve of the Battle of Poltava. After the central area of the city received the traditional areas in the USSR for the name - Lenin Square. In 1982, as a sign of consolidation in the name of its center was a monument to Vladimir Lenin. Its modern name - Independence Square - the area received in 1991 after Ukraine gained independence. In 2001, the monument was dismantled to Lenin.
To date, the Independence Square in Sumy is a beautiful building with a tower of late Stalinism, as well as the building of the regional council, the hotel and the registrar, which are not of great architectural value.
