Sukhumi history goes far back centuries. Even in the VI century BC is located Dioskuriada, ancient Greek colony. Later, the territory was under the Roman Empire, which was fixed on the coast, building a stone fortress Sebastopolis. In the VI century BC had ruled over the territory of the Byzantine Empire. As part of the Georgian kingdom, the region was in the Middle Ages, and in 1810 was captured by Russian troops during the Russian-Turkish war.
