Vaxholm Fortress, also known as Vakskholmsky castle is seboy old fortifications, located on the island of Vaxholm in the Stockholm archipelago.

The history of the fortress begins in the early 16th century with the construction of a fairly simple wooden blockhouse in 1549, then in 1604 there were built new fortifications. In 1612, the fortress defenders managed to repel the attack of the Danes, and in 1719 the army of the Russian Empire failed to capture Vaxholm and get to Stockholm. However, in 1870 the focus shifted from the defensive to the Vaxholm Fortress Strait, where in 1876 was built a new fort - Oscar-Fredriksborg.

In 1833, it was completely reconstructed Vaxholm Fortress, as a result of which it has acquired a modern look. Since 1935, Vaxholm Fortress was declared a national monument, and it came under the management of the State Property Management.

The museum tells of more than five centuries of history of the fortress, which was originally opened in 1947 at Fort Oscar Fredriksborg and moved to Vakskholmskuyu stronghold only in 1964. In 2003, the museum was completely restored. In addition to the exhibition in the open air museum it takes thirty rooms and halls in the western part of the fortress. Visitors have the opportunity to see Vaxholm Fortress same as it was in 1854, can watch a movie about the history of the fortress, and, moreover, have the opportunity to enter one of the centuries-old cellars of the citadel and see what they looked like in the old days. You can also go on a visit to the commandant of the fortress or visit the coastal defense artillery post during World War II.
