Skopelos Island - one of the greenest and most picturesque islands of the Northern Sporades. The magnificent natural landscapes, beautiful beaches, crystal-clear emerald waters of the Aegean Sea and the unique local flavor to the island each year attracts many tourists. Skopelos is the highlight of a great many charming churches and monasteries on the island which has more than 300.

Monastery of the Transfiguration (Transfiguration Monastery) - one of the most beautiful and oldest churches of Skopelos. It is located not far from the island's capital of the same name in a wonderfully scenic location on a hillside. The monastery was built in the 16-17th century and belongs to the Monastery of Xenophon Mount Athos. Painting of the church was engaged in the famous Cretan hagiographer Antonio Agorastos.

Chief KATHOLIKON monastery is made in the traditional "Athos architecture." To this day in the temple preserved a magnificent wooden iconostasis of the 16th century and the unique ancient icons. It is also holy relics, ancient vestments and rare books. Next to the temple there are small facilities that host monastic cells, guest rooms, a kitchen and other utility rooms. In the eastern part is the monastery tower, which was once used as an observatory, as well as the main refuge of monks in an attack by pirates. Gorgeous slender cypress trees surround the holy abode.

Every Sunday and public holidays in the monastery performed the Divine Liturgy. But with great solemnity residents of Skopelos note here August 6 - one of the main Christian holidays - Transfiguration of the Lord.
