Skopelos Island is considered one of the most beautiful Greek islands. Its picturesque cliffs and mountains covered with pine forests, olive groves, gorgeous beaches and cozy coves on the island each year attracts many tourists from all over the world. Skopelos is famous for its beautiful churches and plenty, monasteries and chapels, which are on such a small island, there are more than three hundred.

One of the most famous and interesting churches Skopelos considered Monastery Evangelistria. It is located about 3-4 km to the east of the island's capital on the mountainside in a wonderfully scenic location. Evangelistria Monastery - one of the most significant monuments of the post-Byzantine period on Skopelos.

Evangelistria Monastery was built in the early 18th century by monks from the Holy Mount Athos on the foundations of an ancient Byzantine church. In the second half of the 18th century with the financial support of the local noble family Daponte held in the temple restoration work. Externally, the monastery looks more like a castle, the massive walls of which were designed to protect the holy abode of possible attacks and intruders. The dome of the monastery KATHOLIKON decorated with gold leaf, made by craftsmen from Istanbul. Until our times preserved a beautiful carved iconostasis of the 18th century and the magnificent Byzantine and post-Byzantine icons that represent high artistic and historical value (some icons dating back to the 14th century).

Today the monastery is home to a few nuns. They are engaged in manufacturing of interesting handmade goods, among which the most impressive woven tapestries. All items can be purchased at a small church bench.
