Krimulda medieval castle, rather its ruins, is located in the village of Krimulda that under the city of Sigulda, on the main slope of the right bank of the age-old Gauja River valley.

In 1231 the bishop of Riga has allocated land for the construction of the castle. Presumably, the construction of the castle began in 1255, but in historical documents is no confirmation of this fact.

The first mention of the castle can be found in the protocol of 1312, which was created after Pope Francis of Moliano. At a time when there was a struggle with the archbishop of Riga Order, order troops captured the castle. In 1318 the Order had been ordered to return all the property that was seized during the war.

In the period from 1558 to 1585 years after the Livonian War, he lived in the castle warden from Poland. In 1592 the castle became the property advisor Holdshnera.

In 1601, she passed the Polish-Swedish War, the castle was seized by the Swedes. In the autumn of the same year, retreating, Count Johann von Nassau ordered the destruction of the castle. He was burned. Most likely, after this case the lock is no longer recovered, although in historical documents of the XVII century it is mentioned.

The Poles could not long remain in the Vidzeme region, and he fell to the Swedes. In the annals of 1624, created by the Swedes, it is said that the castle was burned, but managed to survive after a fire in one room, livable, with a stove, but no windows and a cellar, located underneath. Also possession of the castle survived two crates of wood, barn, kitchen and 2 houses with rooms.

In 1625, Sigulda and Krimulda were donated by the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf to his adviser Gabriel Uksenshternu. In 1726, after the Great Northern War, Krimulda was owned by the captain Karlis Helmersenu background. And in 1817 it became the property of Krimulda kind of downpour. In the years 1861-1863 Count Lieven ordered to carry out archaeological excavations. He guides the process historian H.Bruyning. The castle was built on the slope of the right bank of the ancient valley of the Gauja River. On three sides the castle was surrounded by the natural slope of the valley and the river Gauja Vikmeste, and the fourth side was a moat.

The castle was small. It consisted of a main building and two guard towers. In the courtyard of the castle outbuildings were located, made of wood. The castle is built of huge stones with lime binder composition. The castle was built a fortress wall, having a thickness of 1, 5 to 2 meters.

In the southwest area was explained by the main building of the castle. Its dimensions are 54, 4h17, 5 meters. Under the hull were built 3 cellars.
