Photography: Bishop's Palace and the Basilica

The Basilica and the Bishop's Palace Side town is one of the most interesting and famous sights of the country. This striking example of Byzantine architecture, located near the eastern gate of the city, at the intersection of two streets - streets column originating from the main gate of the city, and the streets leading from the eastern gate of the town of Side. Entrance to the building is located on the east side.

Basilica Bishop is considered one of the oldest structures preserved in Turkey to this day. Approximate date of commencement of its construction - 6th century BC. As basilica and the palace have their special geometric proportions.

The complex consists of a plurality of rooms. In the center is a square of the Basilica of the living room, which consists of three small offices. After the narthex (covered space between the entrance and the center at the front wall of the temple) basilica is divided into three naves with two rows of columns slim. The altar is directed to the east. Inside it looks like a round, but apparently - has a triangular shape. The altar room had previously been three-stage seats for the ministers of the basilica.

Baptismal quadrangular structure is situated to the north of the altar space, it is possible to go through a fairly narrow corridor. In the baptismal room, three offices, and its walls are decorated with semi-circular and quadrangular stone niche. In the middle of the room is a marble baptismal pool, with three steps leading to the west. In the northern and southern parts of the baptismal room were built two semi-circular pool, conceding Christening size. The ceiling of the basilica was a set of brick belts.

To the south of the basilica is the Episcopal Palace, it consists of parallel spaces of different shapes. Between these two structures to be martrion (room tomb), in the western part of which is the entrance to the palace. The corridors, indoor graceful stone arches linking the rooms of the palace. Room bishop has quadrangular shape and is divided into three parts. The arches of the roof of the palace differ in size, that looks very nice from the outside. Not far from the palace is a small chapel and a bishop.

Once all of this architectural complex was surrounded by high walls and was located in a beautiful garden. Its area is about 9700 square meters. m. The Basilica and the palace were laid out and partially built in a time when the Side was chosen to host the residence of the bishop, but acquired its final form only after several centuries.

Unfortunately, basil is in a dilapidated condition, but despite this, the original Turkish architecture, cleverly complemented by Byzantine motifs, this property attracts a large number of judges of the historical features of the culture of ancient Turkey.
