In the eastern part of the Danube Plain, near the town of Shumen is located a scenic natural area - the park Shumen Plateau. It covers an area of ​​3895, 8 hectares, the highest point - 502 meters above sea level. Since 1980, in order to preserve the flora, fauna and natural landscapes of this place officially declared a protected zone.

Moderate continental climate favors the development of vegetation - forests cover about 90% of the plateau. It affects a variety of flora: for example, in the park there are 14 species of orchids and over 250 species of various herbs and flowers. Of 64 species of plants are protected. Especially for their protection in the reserve set up special zones "slur Coria" (forest of oak trees, the age of some of them - more than 350 years), "Bukaka" (centenary beech forest), "Dervish" (the only place in Bulgaria where horse chestnut growing, some specimens of which reach 35 m in height), "Mogilatov" (steppe part of the plateau).

The park has found his home some 600 species of vertebrates and invertebrates. This deer, foxes, wild boars, badgers, squirrels and so forth. The richly represented and bird kingdom. Many representatives of the local fauna are protected status: goshawk, black woodpecker, hamster Newton and others.

No less diverse and inanimate nature of the Shumen Plateau. In the park we found about 60 karst caves, two of them - the mystery of Ponor and bubbly - are among the largest caves in Bulgaria. Visitors can admire the beautiful long incisions similar to small canyons, karst pits and rocky peaks.

People in ancient times lived on the plateau. At different times there existed the ancient Thracian, medieval settlements. Well-preserved fortress of Shumen - a complex of residential and fortified buildings. In XII - XIV centuries. in remote places on the rocks it was built monasteries.
