Semmering Railway - the world's first railway line, located in the mountains. It located in Austria and runs between Gloggnitz and Mürzzuschlag through a mountain pass Semmering is a very difficult terrain and the considerable altitude difference. Until now operational and is managed by the Austrian Federal Railways.

Semmering Railway was built from 1848 to 1854. In the construction were employed about 20 thousand people. Mountain railway project was created by architect Karl Gega. The railway runs at an altitude of 985 meters above sea level, and therefore the structure has 14 tunnels and 16 viaducts (several two-storey), over 100 curved stone bridges and 11 railway. Several office buildings were built and stop waste, which were formed during the construction of tunnels. The total length of the railway is 41 kilometers.

In the construction used new technologies and methods. In addition, they have been developed and new engines capable of coping with the turning radius of the railway. Elevations throughout the road is 460 meters in some parts of the steepness of the web reaches 2, 5%, which is equivalent to rise by 1 meter to 40 meters of the road.

During the construction of the railway architect sought to create not only high-tech fabric, but also to encircle the picturesque scenery that would have pleased the train passengers. Currently, these parts are ski resorts, the competition is held.

In 1998, the Semmering Railway was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
