Riga Synagogue is the only synagogue in Latvia, it is located in the old Riga on the street Peitavas. In the late 19th century in Riga it formed a religious community, which united the Jews living in the area. For the construction of a plot of land was purchased, and in 1903 received a building permit.

Designed the synagogue two people: a famous architect, art historian Wilhelm Neumann and aspiring architect Hermann Zeyberlih. Created project changed several times, but the construction of the building was completed in 1905.

Riga Street Synagogue Peitavas was one of four synagogues in the capital. However, July 4, 1941, after the capture of Riga by German troops, all synagogues were burned except for this. She was not burned only because the building was in the Old Town, and arsonists were afraid that will burn the entire Old City. After the war, in the synagogue, in the east wall found a hiding place in which the Torah scrolls were hidden. It is assumed that the priest hid the manuscript Reformed Church Gustav Shaurums. The church is located near the synagogue.

During the Soviet period Riga Synagogue, one of the few existing in the Soviet Union, it became the center of Jewish life in the capital, in spite of all the persecution and surveillance. In Soviet times, it was an unofficial ban on Jewish religious life, however, the synagogue did not stop their work. Money to repair practically not allocated, so a few members of the religious community in the best of their ability and able to repair and maintain the building. The choir of the synagogue, the head of which was the famous cantor Abraham Abrami, was known not only in the Jewish community.

Riga Street Synagogue Peitavas - one of the few religious buildings in Riga, made in the Art Nouveau (Jugendstil). In the inner interior and external decoration can be seen ancient Egyptian and Babylonian motifs, but rather present the image of palm branches and lotus flowers. Throughout 2007 and 2009. carried out the restoration of the building. Most of the funds provided Euro-funds, in addition, financial support was provided by the state and about a hundred individuals who have made donations.
