Occupation Museum was established in 1993 in the heart of Riga, located on an area of Fusiliers. The purpose of this museum was to highlight the history of Latvia during the period from 1940 to 1991. This is the period of occupation of Latvia by two totalitarian regimes of the time. From 1940 to 1941 the country was under the Soviet regime. From 1941 to 1944, Latvia established a regime of Nazi Germany. From 1944 to 1991 the country again, Soviet power was established. In 1991, Latvia, first of all the former Soviet republics, declared its independence.

Prior research staff and employees of the museum was an object, multifaceted and significantly lighten the impact of these totalitarian regimes on the development of the Latvian state. During the period of formation have been collected over thirty thousand different documents, letters and photos of the places and the conclusion of the settlement, evidence of the surviving victims of repression, official documents of the period of the Nazi genocide and the period of Soviet occupation.

To work on the collection and processing of materials and exhibits attracted scientists from around the world, including from Russia, Sweden, the United States and Great Britain. Comments made to exhibits in several languages simultaneously: in Latvian, Russian, German, English and French. This fact simplifies the museum employees to achieve their goals. Firstly, any visitor, and it should be noted that the visit to the museum is free to the public, can understand the meaning of their own exhibits and draw their own conclusions about this period of history. Secondly it facilitates visiting the museum, including in other countries. During his tenure, the museum went to the United States, Canada, Australia and throughout Europe. Significantly, that the museum exhibits were organized even in the European Parliament.

The museum also organizes temporary exhibitions, presenting new exhibits. In addition, the museum staff hold special sessions with students on the history of Latvia and seminars with teachers of history, which presented a new documentary and audio / video information gathered in the museum's research staff and enthusiasts.

There was a special annual almanac Occupation Museum of Latvia, available to all who wish to learn the history of the country, containing museums and novelties which he added to the upcoming publication of the year.

One of the most painful fact of world history - it is the Holocaust. This phenomenon is reflected in a special part of the museum exhibition. Although the period of Hitler, the Nazi occupation of Latvia was relatively short in terms of history, this section contains a lot of documents, evidence and exhibits.

Private exhibition of the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia dedicated to the victims of political terror and Stalinist repression. There was even a camera recreated gulag, the visitors were able to see the conditions in which political prisoners were held during the time of Stalin's repression. This section also contains the documents and videos showing the negative impact of the period of the Soviet occupation in the development and formation of the Latvian people's nationality. The exhibits reflect the particular stagnation in the development of culture and economy taking place in this period.

The method of registration of exhibitions and methods of selection and supply of museum materials caused museum visitors with mixed feelings. There are even arguments about the correctness of some exhibitions. Anyway, the museum is to review documentary evidence and every visitor has the right to create their own picture of this undoubtedly difficult period in the life of Latvia.
