Berg's market is the historical ensemble of buildings between Elizabetes, Dzirnavu and Marijas Riga, designed by Konstantin Pēkšēns.

Kristaps Kalnins was born in 1843 on a farm Berzmuyzha (Dobele District, Latvia) in the family of a laborer. At 16, he made his way to Riga and since then has become the most submitted Kristaps Berg, as in the city of all favorable places were in the possession of the Germans. He later became a famous holder of houses, major industrialist and philanthropist. In 1875, Berg built his first apartment house on the street Elizabetes 10 in conjunction with the architect Janis Baumanis, who later designed his year.

In 1887, it was intended construction market, which is a pedestrian mall, which would, on the idea of Berg was part of a shopping courtyard, arcade and gallery. Shells from the street Marijas gained its eclectic facade. The following year, there was a building from the street Dzirnavu. And 4 years later they were joined by business line and with a luxurious entrance from Elizabetes Street. In 1895 there was also the last, the poorest and hastily built, 4-storey stucco building in the bazaar alleys, where now located hotel. And finally, in 1900, it was built 6-storey building and the most luxurious bazaar, nestled on the corner of Marijas and Elizabetes. For merchants were equipped with 131 seats, which were immediately occupied.

Bazar Berg turned unique. But the Berg at laying the first stone, had a different opinion about the purpose of his creation. Kristaps Kalnins, being a simple guy from the village, wanted to feel in my institution more native spirit. Upper floors were brought to inns where in 1888 at the III song festival housed 800 performers. Also in the Bergs Bazaar and stables were located.

After the death of Berg, his sons took care of the market initially fine, but large buildings are not built. In 1909, building on Dzirnavu Street was equipped with sewers and running water.

In 1912 Arved Berg bought a new land from the street Elizabetes. Here he was going to remove the wooden house built in 1815, in which no value and benefits not seen, and in its place build a five-story apartment house. Bergs do not like the wooden houses in the market, but despite this, and demolished 2 houses of 3 ex. But, ultimately, the idea of Berg did not come true.

After World War bazaar owners, though, it was still what was going on with the pre-war pride. For the sake of profit Bergs patched all the arcade-lined streets, yards led workshops full of scandals. But in 1982 it was intended to demolish the buildings and half in the next 18 years to build a perfect socialist paradise shopping, parking facilities and management, whose borders would be adjoined to the street Krisjana Baron. The reality proved to be not so cruel as descendants of Berg in 1994 organized the reconstruction of the Bergs Bazaar is much softer and more delicate than that and reached its original luster.

Currently, the Bergs Bazaar is organized twice a month only in Riga antiques market where you can buy antique home furnishings and many other things, the witnesses of the past.
