The scenic Greek island of Rhodes is considered to be the "Pearl of the Mediterranean". The stunning beauty of landscapes, beautiful beaches with crystal-clear water, and, of course, a rich cultural and historical heritage of the island each year attracts many tourists from all over the world.

Rhodes is famous for its sunny many fine churches and monasteries. One of the most important religious sites of Rhodes is unquestionably active monastery Moni Thari. It is located in a wonderfully scenic location about 40 km south of the capital of the island and just a few kilometers from the small village Laerma. The monastery is securely hidden from prying eyes in a thick forest and it is not visible from the main road. In the Middle Ages this location was very convenient, since there was the constant threat of attacks by pirates, actively hunted in the coastal waters of Rhodes.

According to one local legend the church was built here in the 9th century by the order of the terminally ill Byzantine princess miraculously cured once construction was completed. Some fragments of the original temple are preserved to the present day. In general, the monastery complex that we see today dates mostly 12-13 centuries and is one of the oldest temples of the island.

Of particular interest is the interior of the main KATHOLIKON monastery nave, apse and cupola are covered with magnificent ancient frescoes. The earliest works date from the early 12th century and are of high artistic and historical value.

Today the monastery Moni Thari recognized as one of the most significant Byzantine monuments of the island of Rhodes.
