Church of St. Ildefonso located near Batalha Square. Earlier, on the site of the Church of Saint Ildefonso chapel was built in the XIII century. Chapel was dedicated to the Holy Alifonu, and is a gathering place for parishioners to pray. In 1709 a chapel was nearly destroyed. It was demolished and on the site began in the same year the construction of the new church, which was built about 30 years. The first stage of construction was completed in 1730 when the main part of the church was erected and the tympanum, which indicated the date of construction. Finally, the church has added two in 1739; were finished two bell towers on the sides, decorated the facade.

The building was built in the Baroque style. The impressive facade of the church, which is covered with tiles "azulezush", and inside the temple, visitors will see luxurious retablo. On tiles depicting scenes from the life of St. Ildefonso, as well as images from the Gospel. To cover the walls took more than 11,000 tiles on the pattern worked Portuguese artist Georges Colas, known for his work on the tiles "azulezush." Retablo was performed by the famous Italian architect, the master of the Italian Baroque, Nicolau Nasoni, who had a very imaginative, and also built a lot of other interesting buildings in Portugal. He worked on the retablo and set its architect Miguel Francisco da Silva.

After the hurricane in 1819 in the church were restored. But the siege of the city of Porto in 1833, the church suffered greatly from the shelling. In 1967 restoration works were carried out, resulting in the same stained glass windows have been replaced.
