Not far from the Douro River, next to the Ribeira, he located one of the most famous churches in the city of Oporto - the Church of St. Francisco. The church is located in the historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 1233 the church building was laid, but it was built only in 1400.
The building was built in the Gothic style and is famous for interior decoration in the Baroque style, made in the 18th century. The altars, railings, columns and arches are covered with carved gilded wood depicting garlands, angels and animals. In fulfillment of these ornaments went about 200 kg of gold powder.
The main facade is decorated with a large Franciscan church and artfully arranged window-rose in the Gothic style. This window is the only original decoration of the main facade of the building. The western portal of the church is Baroque, decorated with columns of Solomon and the statue of St. Francis, whose figure was carved from a single piece of granite. South portal, which overlooks the river, as is Gothic and has a triangular pediment with the pentagram. He can be reached by climbing the stairs leading from the main facade. Login to the portal consists of a group of Gothic archivolt and the inner part of the profile is decorated with an arcade-style "Mudejar" (Islamic influence).
Among the altar of the church attracts the most impressive of them - the altar of the northern side aisle to the famous "Tree of Jesse", gold composition in the form of a tree trunk with branches that support twelve sculptures. "Tree of Jesse" - a genealogy of Christ depicting the twelve kings of Israel.
