Church of San Lorenzo was built in 1577 by monks of the Order of the Jesuits, and is not far from the Cathedral of Porto. The architecture of the building combines two styles: Mannerism and Baroque. Construction of the temple was conducted on donations of church members. Among them was the Fray Luis Alvaro de Tavora, who is buried on the territory of the church. The church of San Lorenzo is called Igreyya dos Grilosh. There is a legend that the church got its name from the area Grill, where profits Jesuit monks.

Church and Monastery of San Lorenzo built against the wishes of the municipality and the population. However, the followers of St. Ignatius of Loyola, who was the founder of the Society of Jesus, finally succeeded and built a coveted school seminary in which teaching was free, which brought her great popularity. The construction was in charge of the seminary Baltasar Alvares.

Due to the fact that in 1759 had eliminated all religious orders on the orders of the Marquis de Pombal, Portugal left the Jesuits and the church gave the University of Coimbra. Soon, the building passed into the hands of the monks of the Order of Saint Augustine and it was in their possession from 1780 to 1832.

Very impressive facade of the church tower and dome.
