Shipwreck Museum is located in the historic pier of Port Douglas at the entrance to the bay of Dixon.
The museum building was erected in 1904, when the Council Douglas County took a loan from the Queensland Government to build a new berth for ships in a more convenient location of the bay. Last dock was used for its intended purpose in 1958. Then for many years he was in private hands. And in 1980 in the building, a former storeroom pier opened Shipwreck Museum.
The museum building some interesting architectural details: for example, its roof is built of blocks of 30h15 and 20x15 cm, and the walls are covered not from the outside, but from within - it contributed to a better storage of sugar packed in bags. Today, the museum building is an important element of the urban landscape, it is perfectly visible from the sea and the hills surrounding the city.
Museum exhibits - many artifacts raised from the ships sunk in the Great Barrier Reef - for 20 years collecting Ben Kropps. His collection includes ancient utensils, bronze tools and other items.
