Perth Zoo was founded in 1898 on an area of ​​17 hectares .  The idea of ​​its creation arose a few years earlier to the Committee on the acclimatization of Western Australia, which is intended to carry out the introduction of European animals in the new continent .  Already in 1987, the caves were built to bear, monkey house, aviaries for a variety of mammals and pens for guinea pigs .  And the first animals became orangutan, two monkeys, 4 South American ostrich, a pair of lions and a tiger .  During the first year of the Zoo visited by 53 thousand people, and the history of the zoo - more than a hundred years - he never closed! Today, the zoo contains more than a thousand animals .  Here gathered an extensive botanical collection .  Among the first floral exposition of the zoo were the roses, lupines, tropical plants and palm trees .  Incidentally, the palm trees, planted over a century ago, is still growing at the Zoo - about 60 species, including the rare palm Canary Islands .  Interestingly, here are grown and culture, reaching for animal feed, - lettuce, alfalfa, carrots, onions . 

The zoo is divided into three main zones: A walk in the Australian, Asian rain forest and the African Savannah with a few additional exhibits (such as Birds of South America or the Small Primates). All zones recreate natural natural habitat of animals.

The zone includes the Australian exhibition, introducing the inhabitants of the wetlands and scrub country, reptiles and nocturnal animals. In the area of ​​the African savannah in closed enclosures can see lions, cheetahs, zebras, Grant, baboons, giraffes Rothschild, radiant turtles, meerkats, hyenas and rhinos. Visitors watch the animals, walking along the trail, made in the form of a dry river bed.

Asian rain forest - is home to the endangered Asian animals. It is home to Asian elephants, red pandas, Nepal, oriental small-clawed otter, Sumatran orangutans, tigers, sloth bear and gibbons. Perth Zoo is investing in the protection of many of these species in the wild. So, his breeding program Sumatran orangutan is considered to be the most successful in the world - in 1970 there were 27 vykormleno orangutans. In 2006, one of the orangutan born at the zoo, was released into the wild in Sumatra as part of an international program to restore populations of these animals.
