The Church of Saint-Hippolyte on the Parisian standards is young, it is a little more than a hundred years. To believe in it, looking at the Gothic facade of stone and sandstone, it is impossible. Name the church received in memory of those standing here once the church of Saint-Hippolyte-du Faubourg, destroyed during the years of urban transformation of Baron Haussmann.

At the end of the XIX century Parisian Southeast Porte de Choisy rapidly growing: built residential areas, development of industry. In 1897, neighboring parishes have spiritual patronage over populated areas. At first, the priests celebrated Mass in a simple trailer. A few years later, a talented designer Hippolyte Panhard cars donated a new parish money to buy the land for the church. It was a generous gift: the land during the boom was very expensive.

The building is in the Gothic style was designed by architect Jules Astruc. In 1910 the church was completed and consecrated in honor of the Christian martyr Saint Hippolytus.

Saint Hippolyte was the guardian of the prison under the Emperors Decius and Valerian (III century). In Christianity drew Hippolyte before his execution Archdeacon Lawrence, and the jailer cellar body was executed in the Christian tradition. This was told Dekiyu who ordered the beating of Hippolytus sticks, demanding renunciation of faith. "I am a warrior of Christ, my Savior, and I wish for him to die," - he replied the jailer. All of his family were killed, most of Hippolytus tied to horses, which eked out a martyr on the stones until he died.

Above the entrance to the church is the tympanum brush Henri Marret "Double Martyrdom of St. Hippolytus and St. Lawrence." The artist is true to the suffering of horses tied to the powerful St. Hippolytus, but sinned against the truth in respect of St. Lawrence: he ended his days on an iron grate over the fire.

In 1924 the church was expanded and gained its present size. Her interior is highlighted in the Byzantine mosaics the spirit of Henri Girard. Above the entrance to the main nave - the work of Jacques Martin reliefs depicting the life of St. Hippolyte.

The area where the church is built skyscrapers, the bell tower of Saint-Hippolyte is lost on their background. Generational change, change of the peoples: Porte de Choisy Now - District of immigrants from Southeast Asia. The very same church is located in the center of the local Chinatown.
