Melville Lighthouse

Melville Lighthouse, located on a deserted south coast Balabak, which is part of the province of Palawan. To reach it is not so easy, but the trip is worth it. With a wonderful view of the lighthouse in the distance lies a mountainous island, owned by the Philippines. They say that in good weather here you can even see the outline of the island of Borneo. At the lighthouse caretaker lives that maintains it in good condition and protect from vandals.

Lighthouse builders were the Spaniards in the 19th century, and in 1898 it became the property of the Americans. For over a hundred years, the lighthouse served as a guiding light for passing ships. Today, it is an amazingly beautiful building that seems built of coral, has become a tourist attraction. A couple of hundred meters from it was built another lighthouse powered by solar batteries.

The road to the lighthouse can take several hours or even a couple of days: first you need to get to the town of Tio Tuba at the southern tip of Palawan and then take the ferry to the island Balabak. The ferry usually sent to the area for lunch and arrives in town Balabak for dinner before it gets dark. The next day will have to take a boat to go to the southern shore of the island - the trip takes about two hours.

Residents of the island are proud of the lighthouse and consider it as its main tourist attraction. Himself Balabak island famous for beautiful coast with lots of secluded coves and sandy beaches, where you can relax after a trip to the lighthouse. On the island there are rare species such as the Asian Mouse-deer, as well as an incredibly beautiful birds, affecting their colorful plumage. Interest for tourists may be indigenous people and culture of these places - the tribe "molbogs."
