Fort San Pedro - military fortification built by the Spanish conquistadors led by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi. Fort is located in what is now the Plaza Independencia in Cebu City, the capital of the same name by the Philippine province. Construction of the fortress began in 1565 and ended only two centuries later - in 1738. Today, this triangle is considered the bastion of old fort Philippines, moreover, it is also the smallest. Over the years of its history the fort of San Pedro was not only the fortification, but also a stronghold of the revolutionary movement of the Filipino people in the late 19th century, a prison and even a zoo.

The fort has the shape of a triangle with two sides facing the sea, and the third - to the land. "Sea" the walls were reinforced with guns and wooden fence. The fortifications of the fort bore the name of La Concepcion, Ignacio de Loyola and San Miguel. The total area of ​​the fort was only a little more than 2 thousand square meters, the height of walls reached 6, 1 meter, and the thickness - 2, 4 meters. The length of the fence is equal to 380 meters. The walls of the fort were of unequal length, and the one that faces the city, is the entrance to the fortress. Total fort protected the 14 guns, most of which have survived to the present day.

So far, relatively little is known about what work was carried out on the territory of the fort from the mid-16th century until 1739, when Philip II of Spain demanded detailed information about the island of Cebu and its fortifications. In the late 19th century, the fort was renovated as part of the development of the city of Cebu. During the American domination in the fort housed US military barracks, which later - from 1937 to 1941 - there was a school for local residents. During the Second World War in the walls of the fort have found refuge Japanese residents of Cebu, and after the war are based military camp.

In 1957, the public was alarmed Cebu message about the possible demolition of the Fort San Pedro - his place was planned to build a new city hall .  Then began the movement to protect the historical monument, activists who have reached the highest echelons of power .  Fortunately, managed to defend the castle, but for several years on its territory located zoo, which was led by a local religious sect .  By 1968, the walls of the fort and its façade came to appalling state .  In a short time was a plan for the restoration of buildings and the zoo, it was decided to move to another location .  The restoration process was long and tedious: to recreate as close as possible to the original view of the fort were used coral, raised from the seabed .  After a year and a half were ready facade, the main building, alley and a garden on the roof Lookout Tower .  In the main building housed the office of the Department of Tourism and lieutenants in the barracks - a museum that stores the documents, drawings and sculptures by the Spanish period .  Patio turned into open-air theater, and around the fort itself pitched park where established huge statues of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and the Italian explorer Antonio Pigafetta, Magellan's expedition party .
