Durankulak Lake - the area is under the protection, 15 km north of the town of Shabla and near the Bulgarian-Romanian border. According to the Order of the Council of Ministers in February 1980, it is officially named a protected area. This lake has an area of ​​about 447 hectares is one of the best preserved coastal areas in Bulgaria. The objective of this area - to save more than 260 kinds of rare species of flora and fauna found in the Durankulak lake, and to protect them from extinction.

The Durankulak lake there are 12 members of the species of mammals, 23 - fish, 7 - 5 and amphibians - reptiles.
